内容記述 Malaysian tropical rainforests are natural ecosystems that have evolved over the centuries and support a wide range of habitats, forming the cradle of the country’s biodiversity. The forest has been internationally recognized as one of the world’s megadiversity hotspots for both flora and fauna. The Convention on Biological Diversity reported that Malaysia’s flora is vibrant and conservatively estimated to comprise approximately 15,000 species of higher plants with over 1,100 species of ferns and fern allies, many of which are native. This diversity is reflected in several ecological zones established in the country, most notably the 50-hectare plot in Pasoh, Peninsular Malaysia, with 814 tree species, and the 52-hectare plot in Lambir, Sarawak, with over 1200 tree species. The forest is carefully managed in accordance with the principles of sustainable forest management to achieve clearly specified objectives regarding the production of a continuous flow of desired forest products and services without unduly reducing its inherent future productivity or causing undesirable effects on the physical and social environment. The forests are also managed as a renewable resource on a sustainable-yield basis, contributing significantly to the country’s socioeconomic development. Apart from its socioeconomic role, the forest also plays important protective functions, including maintaining environmental stability, minimizing damage to rivers and agricultural land by floods and erosion, and safeguarding water supplies. Malaysia had practiced forest conservation since the 1930s. It established a network of protected areas for the preservation of biological diversity through its system of national parks, wildlife reserves and sanctuaries, and nature parks. Peninsular Malaysia’s largest national park, Taman Negara, which comprises mainly virgin forests of various types covering 434,351 ha, was announced in 1939. Malaysia has also designated its forested land as protected areas, which cover watershed protected areas, wildlife sanctuaries, and fully protected forest areas. The forestry sector’s greatest challenge is to maximize the forest area’s social, economic, and environmental benefits on a sustainable basis.
