This JIRCAS working report is mainly based on the work of Suwa et al. (2025). In the Chikus Forest Reserve in Perak, Malaysia, different cutting row numbers (1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 rows) of Acacia mangium were used to establish plantations of Dipterocarpaceae species. These species showed distinct growth responses to cutting row number, particularly a significant increase in initial survival rate as row number decreased. We hypothesized that the variation in initial survival of Neobalanocarpus heimii plantations across cutting row numbers reflects differences in light environment, and we attempted to reproduce this pattern by modifying SEIB-DGVM, an individual-based forest dynamics model. The model incorporated climatic conditions near the study site and species-specific parameters, including tree architectural trait and wood density. In addition to the default assumption that individual mortality depends on the net production per leaf area, we introduced a lightdependent mortality function based on relative light intensity. Using this modified model, we simulated N. heimii survival over 6 years under three cutting row numbers (2, 4, and 8 rows). The predicted survival rates closely matched observed trends. |
