内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Agriculture in Malaysia continues to face dynamic global and regional realities shaped by climate change, resource constraints, and rising demands for sustainable food systems. In response, the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) has positioned agricultural research and innovation at the forefront of national strategies to ensure food security, enhance resilience, and drive sustainable growth.
MARDI’s research and development (R&D) efforts focus on advancing technology for the nation, the market, and public goods. These include high-impact innovations such as the development of improved rice varieties. For example, the MR333 rice variety, specifically bred for granary areas and the MR CL3 and MR CL4 Clearfield® varieties were designed to address challenges in weedy rice issues. MARDI also improved other commodities such as new hybrid coconut and grain corn, coffee clones, shallot varieties, as well as a certified seed quality traceability system.
Complementary technological interventions in smart and precision farming, fertigation systems, and plant factory concepts further strengthen productivity and adaptability. To support commercialization and value creation, MARDI has developed research innovation into market-ready products, ranging from biofertilizers, sensor technologies to functional food products.
Green growth and sustainability remain core priorities, reflected in technologies that reduce input use, improve soil health, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Notable examples include alternate wetting and drying (AWD) in rice farming, smart paddy irrigation systems with real-time monitoring, and many more. Those initiatives align with Malaysia’s national commitment to lowcarbon development and the broader target of achieving Net-Zero.
Looking ahead, MARDI emphasizes the translation of research into technologies with higher adoption rates, provide future-ready agriculture by enabling a transformation of Malaysia’s food system through bio-innovation, digitalization, climate-resilient solutions and to strengthen resilience Asia-Monsoon system against shared challenges. To achieve these, MARDI has charted strategic planning towards a digital, green, inclusive, and resilient into the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030). Through continuous effort in R&D, synergized with national policies and international collaboration, MARDI is committed to developing future-ready agriculture capable of overcome the challenges of sustainability, competitiveness, and food security in the decades to come.
